Ha Phororo Youth Retreat Centre, located in Hartbeespoort, is a community formed around a shared commitment to spiritual life, personal responsibility, and communal living.
Ha Phororo, which literally means "The Waterfall" in Sesotho, has existed as a community since its establishment by Fr. Chris Schonenberger in 1998. Formally registered in 2006, it stands within the Catholic tradition under the Archdiocese of Pretoria and operates in a welcoming, ecumenical and Interfaith spirit.
Inspired by the contemplative model of Taizé and shaped within an African context, Ha Phororo brings together young people and adults into a structured environment where life is shared, work is carried, and growth is expected.
To be a community united by a shared hunger for spirituality and a commitment to living the deeper dimensions of life.
To accompany young people in their search for a deeper spiritual life, equipping them with practical skills, character, and responsibility, so that they may become constructive members of society.
The Centre operates within the values of the South African Constitution, grounded in dignity, responsibility, and respect.
Its life is shaped by:
Ubuntu — shared humanity and mutual responsibility
Christian spiritual tradition
Ecumenical and interfaith openness
Responsibility toward the whole of life
